In this warm and cozy November, we spent a particularly meaningful Thanksgiving week with the children. This holiday is not just a feast of turkey, but also a profound learning journey about "gratitude."

The Warmth of Handmade: DIY Thanksgiving Cards

In reading and literature class, the children create unique Thanksgiving cards. Stroke by stroke, cut and paste, they transformed the gratitude they are usually too shy to express into concrete words and images. Watching their serious and focused expressions, we knew that this gift, coming from the heart, would become the family's most precious keepsake.

Tracing Cultural Roots: The Origin of Thanksgiving

During the course, the teacher led the students through history, back to Plymouth in 1620. We explored the story of the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe, understanding the cultural blending and historical significance behind this holiday. The children learned that the core spirit of Thanksgiving is not just celebrating the harvest, but also commemorating the mutual aid and integration between different groups.

The Taste of Happiness: School Thanksgiving Meal

The end of the learning journey was a warm feast. The school carefully prepared a Thanksgiving meal. When the fragrant chicken legs (replacing turkey), pumpkin soup, and cornbread were served, the children's faces were full of surprise and anticipation. We sat together, in a joyful atmosphere, personally experiencing the holiday's traditions and feeling the warmth and blessings from the school, this big family.

SEL Social-Emotional Learning Practice: Learning Gratitude

The most important part was the "Gratitude Practice" integrated with Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). We guided the children to think: What is true thanks? Besides family, who else should we thank? The children enthusiastically shared, from classmates and teachers, to the school security guards, the kitchen staff who make school lunches, and even the sunlight and breeze outside the window. This awareness and gratitude for all things is precisely the starting point for cultivating empathy and positive character.

This Thanksgiving, we sowed the seeds of "gratitude." May the children always remember that a thankful heart can make ordinary day shine.
